MARKETS ARE GLOBAL. COMPETITION IS GLOBAL. SHOULDN’T EUROPE’S PERSPECTIVE BE GLOBAL? On February 1, the European Commission will meet to decide on the merger of NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Börse. Some in the Commission oppose the merger on the grounds that the merged company would stifle competition in European derivatives trading. This ignores the realities of markets today and tomorrow. The Commission’s own regulatory reform agenda is premised on the notion that the market for derivatives is global and includes over-the-counter trading. In the global interest rate derivatives market, the merged company would represent around 16% of the total value traded annually. The market for derivatives is global, and regulatory arbitrage must be excluded. The merger would benefit not just the financial markets, but the real economy as well. Integrating the key EU markets would mean €3 Billion in capital efficiencies for clients and billions in cost savings for users. That’s desperately needed capital that can be redeployed in the real economy.
