HCA Healthcare Names Dr. Monique Butler as President of Graduate Medical Education

HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, today announced that Dr. Monique Butler has been appointed president of Graduate Medical Education, effective March 1, 2024. Dr. Butler succeeds Dr. Bruce Deighton who will retire from HCA Healthcare later in 2024.

In her new role, Dr. Butler is responsible for the enterprise-wide leadership of HCA Healthcare’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) strategy, quality and operations, including the growth and development, program accreditation and clinical performance of more than 300 residency and fellowship programs across 16 states and over 70 teaching hospitals.

Previously, Dr. Butler served as the chief medical officer for HCA Healthcare’s North Florida Division for the past three years. Under her leadership, North Florida was consistently recognized for care excellence, quality and physician satisfaction. Dr. Butler joined HCA Healthcare in 2018 as the chief medical officer of Swedish Medical Center. Previously, Dr. Butler has held a variety of clinical leadership roles, including chief operating officer at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, chief medical officer at Detroit Receiving Hospital and chief medical officer at Sinai-Grace Hospital. In each of these roles, Dr. Butler was responsible for the strategy, development, operations and quality of GME programs with a strong focus on faculty recruitment, resident advocacy, resident retention, engagement and communication.

Dr. Butler earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology – Movement Science from the University of Michigan, a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee. Additionally, she maintains faculty assignments at University of Central Florida School of Medicine and University of Tennessee Haslam College of Business.

Dr. Deighton will stay engaged as the senior advisor to the president of GME to ensure a seamless transition, leveraging their history of successful collaboration for the benefit of the residents, fellows, faculty and communities HCA Healthcare serves.

Under Dr. Deighton’s leadership, HCA Healthcare’s GME platform grew to 5,185 residents at 72 hospitals. Leveraging HCA Healthcare’s scale, the GME programs are designed to prepare the next generation of physicians to positively impact communities, attract clinical talent to care facilities and improve the quality of care provided.
