Mastermind Merging Architectural Concepts With Textiles

Hammad Abid, a New York-based textile designer, innovates with three-dimensional textiles using unconventional materials. His work, influenced by his heritage and studies, explores themes of home and sustainability. Abid's research aims to enhance efficiency and reduce waste in industrial textile manufacturing.

Hammad Abid, a New York-based designer, is transforming the concept of three-dimensional textiles through his innovative approach. At just 28 years old, Hammad has already made a significant mark in the world of design, earning numerous accolades, such as the European Product Design Award. His work has been showcased in exhibitions across the U.S. and featured in publications like “The Textile Eye,” a trend report for high-end textiles.

Born into a weaving community in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, Hammad is a fifth-generation weaver, with the art of weaving deeply ingrained in him. His passion blossomed during his master's studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2019, where he explored the fine arts context of his craft.

Hammad blends unconventional materials like ropes, wood, and monofilament with classic cotton and wool. This innovative material vocabulary allows him to create unique sculptures that balance rigidity and flexibility. His complex and dynamic creations mirror architectural structures that evolve with time.

A core theme in Hammad's work is exploring architecture's ability to shape the memory of home, given his family history of migration. His pieces reflect the transience of home and how the associated sense of security can transform over time. Woven by hand on a manual floor loom, his works can be molded into various shapes due to their structural memory woven into them.

The process demands meticulous planning of the intersection between material types and weave structures needed to create the desired shape. “It’s always a dialogue between the materials and their agency within the design process,” Hammad explains. He often starts with sketches on paper, creating iterations with a rough idea of the intended shape. He, then, allows for spontaneous, happy accidents during the weaving.

Beyond his creative endeavors, Hammad is a dedicated researcher and recipient of multiple grants who explores the feasibility of three-dimensional weaving. His research focuses on the practicality of weaving three-dimensional products directly onto a loom in industrial manufacturing contexts. This technique creates finished products through interlacing yarns in multi-layer textile forms, reducing production steps and waste. This approach enhances efficiency, cuts costs, and underscores sustainability.

More than textiles, Hammad Abid's creations are narratives woven from threads of heritage, memory, and innovation. Through his work, he challenges and redefines the understanding of fabric, architecture, and the spaces in between, proving textiles can be as dynamic and transformative as the structures they inspire.
