Union Pacific Sponsors Clean Air Conference

During the three-day Faster Freight Cleaner Air Conference starting today at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif., Union Pacific a gold sponsor of the conference in partnership with GE Transportation, is hosting tours of its green locomotive technology train at the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility. The tours follow pre-conference displays and presentations in West Colton, Fresno, Stockton, Roseville, Oakland and Los Angeles.

Our pre-conference tours of the Green Locomotive Technology Train with GE Transportation were instrumental in helping to educate people within and outside the transportation industry about Union Pacifics environmental programs and initiatives, said Bob Grimaila, vice president-environment and safety. By the end of 2007, Union Pacific will have invested more than $5 billion to purchase new, environmentally friendly locomotives, and will have invested millions of dollars to test technologies that reduce emissions from older locomotives.

As part of the Faster Freight Cleaner Air Conference, Union Pacific and GE Transportation will distribute literature, provide locomotive technology briefings and discuss environmental opportunities within the railroad industry. Featured speakers will include Jim Young, chairman and CEO of Union Pacific Corporation, who is delivering a keynote address. Mike Iden, general director of locomotive engineering for Union Pacific, is moderating the railroad breakout session, Innovative Technology and Programs. And, Lanny Schmid, Union Pacifics director of environmental programs, will serve on a panel to discuss Deployment of the Worlds Cleanest Locomotive Technologies.

In addition to the presentations and Green Locomotive Technology Train tours, Union Pacific has updated the UP and the Environment section of www.up.com that outlines the railroads commitment to protect the environment.
