TR Cutler Suggests CPG Manufacturers Will Continue Double Digit Growth During COVID-19

CPG (consumer packaged goods) manufacturers of toilet paper and hand sanitizers, among others, have seen a surge in demand will likely return to normal inventory levels at some point following COVID-19 once levels abate. The path for manufacturing, such as Deere & Company or Caterpillar, is going to be longer. One early sign is Deere recently pulling its own financial forecast for the current fiscal year.

A spokesperson from Proctor & Gamble, the Cincinnati-based parent company behind Charmin toilet paper, Bounty paper towels and Puffs facial tissue, told Forbes that the company is producing those products in U.S. plants at record-high levels.

International Paper CEO Mark Sutton told CNBC that its pipelines for diaper materials and pulp used by tissue and paper workers are “running wide open.”

The CPG manufacturing industry is ready and able to keep working in the pandemic, heads of trade associations told Food Dive.  Food and beverage manufacturing, delivery and retail is always rolling, regardless of what's going on in the wider world. And the coronavirus threat isn't impacting that aspect.

"No industry is better positioned than a 24/7 industry," Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the Consumer Brands Association, told Food Dive. "...We're used to that aspect. We're used to periods in time where there's much more demand, whether it's around the Super Bowl, whether it's around March Madness, whether it's around the holidays, you know, we're used to having to ramp things up. No one was perfectly prepared for this situation, but no one is better positioned than the broader grocery industry."
