It’s true that college isn’t for everyone. Not all people enjoy school, and getting a degree can come with a hefty price tag. For someone who isn’t interested in going to university, how about considering a roofing career?

What Are the Requirements for a Roofing Career?

Oftentimes, many apprentice roofers have no prior work experience and receive on-the-job training. During this training they gain knowledge of the building and construction industry, as well as, a working knowledge of tools, materials, and the roofing process.

Roofing can be a physically demanding profession. It requires the stamina to stand, climb, and carefully walk in hot, cold, and sometimes windy, snowy, or rainy weather. The work that roofers do ensures that buildings are structurally sound and safe for the personnel or assets protected by the roof.

If you’re unaware of the many benefits of a career in roofing, here are seven reasons why choosing a roofing career might be right for you.

1. Variety of Work

As a roofer, you’ll visit numerous job sites. You may be at one job site for only a couple of days before you’re moving on to another one. This offers lots of interesting views and familiarity with the various terrain in your area.

The variety isn’t just in the locations; it’s also in the type of roofing. The last building you roofed may have been an EPDM roof, while the next one requests wood shake shingles. The processes for each material are going to be unique and you acquire more knowledge along the way.

2. Join a Growing Industry

The roofing industry is expected to see growth of over 10% in the next decade. Roofs will always need to be replaced and new buildings will always be going up. Unlike a lot of industries, it’s unlikely roofing will be replaced with automation anytime soon.

3. Pick Up Other Technical Skills

With a roofing career, you can pick up other skills that could prove useful as your career evolves. You’ll learn to read blueprints and not only develop familiarity with a variety of tools but know how to use them well.

You’ll also hone your critical thinking skills. Calculating roof measurements and the amount of materials needed for each job can become simple tasks.

4. Make a Living Wage

A roofing career offers you the opportunity to make a living wage, not minimum wage. In the United States, the median income for roofers is $46,240, which is comparable to careers that require a university degree. Obviously, the hourly wage as a roofer is highly dependent on where you live.

5. Gain Knowledge in the Industry

Roofers gain knowledge of the construction industry that they can use as stepping stones into a variety of areas. As a roofer you’ll come into contact with people who are in various specializations. If one is of particular interest to you, one day you could earn a certification in that specialty. There are additional long-term careers paths within roofing, as well. The knowledge gained can prepare you to become a project manager, estimator, or building contractor.

6. Enjoy the Outdoors

The ability to work outdoors in the fresh air is a perk for many people. Being outside is not just good for you physically, but it’s good for your mental health as well. If you prefer not to be cooped up in an office all day, roofing may be the ideal job for you.

7. Work Seasonally

In the roofing business, spring and summer are the busy seasons. Depending on where you’re located, fall and winter are typically slower. This fact often frees up time to enjoy other interests during the off season. For all the long hours put in during spring and summer you can take a nice extended break to travel or even pick up a hobby.

A roofing career certainly won’t be a good fit for everyone, but for the person who likes to learn about an industry from the ground up, it can be an exciting and rewarding career.
