Intelligent Medical Objects to Highlight Market Leading Terminology and Data Enablement Solutions at HIMSS22

Intelligent Medical Objects (IMO), a healthcare data enablement company and market leader in clinical terminology services, will be at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS22) meeting to showcase its diverse solutions that improve the quality of healthcare data. Historically focused on terminology solutions and clinical documentation at the point of care, IMO has spent the last few years expanding into data quality, operating room efficiency, and other critical needs in health IT.

“From precise patient cohorting to clinical trials to quality reporting and analytics, IMO’s technology is critical to addressing healthcare’s most pressing health IT needs,” said Ann Barnes, IMO’s CEO. “From standardizing patient information at Sharp HealthCare to continuing to enhance our industry-leading clinical terminology products for our EHR partners, we are proud of the positive impact our solutions are delivering across the health IT sector.”

IMO will be at Booth #3849 at HIMSS and will be showcasing demos of current products. Below is a summary of IMO’s HIMSS news and highlights:

Normalizing clinical data industry-wide

One way to gain a more complete view of a patient is through data normalization. IMO launched IMO Precision Normalize for non-providers in 2020, which was also recently updated for providers in 2022. This technology solution helps to efficiently standardize the vast amount of clinical patient data many organizations in the healthcare ecosystem use daily. Since its launch, IMO has worked with health information exchanges, hospitals, research institutions, health IT, and other organizations to incorporate this technology and deliver results in different areas of the healthcare continuum.

Sharp HealthCare (Sharp) previously used bespoke approaches to standardize patient information. Despite having seasoned data professionals on staff, easily translating clinical concepts and questions into queries and data outputs that deliver actionable information proved difficult and time consuming. Using IMO technology, the Sharp team can query a greater volume of patient information all at once. This is due to the ability of IMO Precision Normalize to align clinical data to a single concept and fill in missing links to standard coding systems like ICD-10-CM, SNOMED CT®, LOINC®, and RxNorm®.

“It’s hard to overstate the value of IMO Precision Normalize,” said Jon McManus, Vice President & Chief Data and Software Development Officer at Sharp. “And it’s exciting to see how this solution is providing us with the power of automated normalization so we can really unlock new value from our data quickly to provide insights across the organization.”

Supporting our partners' terminology needs

IMO and Epic have been partners for many years, with IMO terminology and products supporting clinical documentation, problem list management, and surgical scheduling for Epic customers. IMO’s clinical terminology is also included in Epic’s most recent offering, Garden Plot, which gives small, independent medical groups access to Epic’s software and interoperability network, with minimal overhead.

At HIMSS21, IMO announced a new offering aimed at improving clinical documentation and problem list management for those using the Cerner® Millennium electronic health record (EHR). IMO is working with Greenway to enhance our partnership with new capabilities for Prime Suite EHR. Greenway is currently integrating IMO Core Search API within Prime Suite EHR. This functionality will build upon the existing, foundational clinical terminology that clinicians already use to document with ease.

Supporting the next generation of cohorting

IMO’s expertise in clinical terminology makes it uniquely positioned to understand how complicated and nuanced diagnoses terms and codes roll up into clinically consistent groupings and value sets. IMO Precision Sets, launched in 2020, offers a library of curated clinical value sets that helps develop and implement outcome-based health initiatives by identifying patients with similar conditions. IMO is actively working on new tools that enable our clients to leverage our terminology ontologies and mappings to quickly identify and group clinically consistent patients, based on problem, procedure, labs, and meds data. IMO is also exploring flexible analytic tools that incorporate all patient data to support flexible and accurate patient cohorting.

Expanding terminology to describe all components of patient health and care

IMO is in the business of healthcare taxonomy: the language of describing a patient, their treatment, and their outcomes. Because of Covid, there is broader awareness around improving the use of standard taxonomies in healthcare. Building on IMO’s heritage in patient diagnosis and problem taxonomies, IMO is addressing this need by actively developing new, standard taxonomies, as well as mapping to existing taxonomies, which describe social determinants of health, laboratory orders, medications, pharmacogenetics, and clinical observations.

Taking action on fair and equitable terminology

As the world becomes more connected and aware of how words can stigmatize, be offensive, and induce harm, the continued use of historical language requires more scrutiny. In clinical terminology that consists of millions of words to describe patient attributes and treatments, some longstanding diagnostic medical terminologies are no longer socially acceptable. IMO’s clients have been proactive in addressing these issues and IMO has been working on removing or modifying terms to meet current expectations for diversity and inclusion, as well as to reduce stigmatizations of disabilities.
