Dr. Padmini Murthy selected as Top Global Health Advocate of the Year by IAOTP

Padmini Murthy M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FAMWA, FRSPH, Physician, Activist, Certified Health Education Specialist, Professor in Division of Health Policy and Management, in the Department of Public Health and Global Health Director, was recently selected as Top Global Health Advocate of the Year for 2022 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the healthcare industry.

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. With more than 30 years of international professional experience in Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Padmini Murthy has certainly proven herself as talented and highly skilled in various countries. She is a dynamic results-driven leader who has demonstrated success and advancement throughout her entire career. 

Her areas of expertise include Global Health, Women’s Health, Maternal Healthcare, Human Rights, Promoting the Practice of Safe Motherhood, Activism to Improve the Health of Women in Underserved Communities, Social Determinants of Health, Public Health, Distance Education, Social Media, HIV/ AIDS, and Global Health Diplomacy. Dr. Murthy has been working with UN ambassadors and missions to promote women’s health since the past 20 years on various projects with local efforts in Malawi, India, Suriname, Grenada, Liberia, and Nepal.

In addition to her MD, Dr. Murthy obtained her Master's in Public Health and a Master’s in Management from New York University (NYU). 

Dr. Murthy is the NGO Representative of American Medical Women’s International Association to the United Nations. She has served as a consultant to the United Nations. Dr. Murthy has served as member of the of the Executive Committee of the NGO CSW Committee of NY at the United Nations and The Global NGO Executive committee. She is the chair of the International Health Section of American Public Health Association (APHA) since November 2020. Dr. Murthy is the Global Health Lead for the American Medical Women’s Association. She has been appointed to 3 consecutive terms as the Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights of the American Public Health Association (APHA) which is one of the largest professional organizations of health care professionals (physicians and public health professionals in the world). Dr. Murthy has served as Governing Councilor APHA, representing International Health Section.  She has served as chair of the advisory council for APHA’s Publication Nations Health. In March 2022 Murthy was name member of the Official United States Delegation to the 66 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

In June 2022 Murthy was an invited civilian expert to the National Security Seminar at Army War College, PA.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Murthy has received awards, accolades and has been recognized worldwide for her expertise in healthcare. This year she is being considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine and for the Empowered Woman of the Year Award given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). She will be honored for her distinction as Top Global Health Advocate of the Year for 2022 at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala being held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas this December. 

Dr. Murthy was named Women of the year for 2012-2013 by The National Association of Professional Women USA. In August 2013 at the Triennial medical women’s congress in Seoul, South Korea Murthy was conferred the Jhirad oration award which is given once every 3 years to an outstanding woman physician. She is the first American woman physician to receive this honor an international meeting from the Medical Women’s International Association at which has women physician members in 50 countries. In June 2015, Dr. Murthy was presented the Millennium Milestone Maker Award at the 9th Annual Women’s Symposium at Sias University, China. As faculty at New York Medical College Murthy has been honored by her students as an outstanding teacher and having been an inspiration to pursue their careers in global health. Dr. Murthy is the recipient of the Sojourner Truth Pin which is given to those women who excel in community service. She has been on the Dean's list at NYU Steinhart School of Education, and she was named Public Service Scholar at the Robert F Wagner Graduate School at New York University. 

Furthermore, Dr. Murthy serves as a peer reviewer and Associate Editor for BMC journal of Public Health and Global Journal of Medicine and Public Health. She also serves as reviewer for APHA in the International Health Section and Committee of Women’s Rights. She blogs for Medscape and APHA. Since March 2012 Dr. Murthy hosts and writes the script for a radio show sponsored by AV radio on the Millennium Development Goals which has a worldwide audience. She is the co-editor and author of two text books, has published a children’s book and her book of poetry.  Dr. Murthy has made media appearances on UN Web TV, Indian News Channel, and African Views Radio Show. She has many published articles focused on Women’s Leadership in Promoting Global Health and Well-Being.

Dr. Murthy is highly organized, and she often speaks at workshops and seminars internationally providing guidance on women’s health and the challenges they face. 

Dr. Murthy has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including First Indian born American in 75 years to receive the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal recognizing her work in promoting women’s health globally  from the American medical Women’s Association . Dr. Murthy has launched the Safe Motherhood Malawi initiative at NYMC and the team has raised funds to build a maternity waiting home and collected hospital supplies for a rural clinic.
